Prune Dead Branches
In Dallas, the winters are usually mild. Thus, on a warmer day in the new year, it’s a good idea to walk around your front and backyard and prune your trees and shrubs that are exhibiting broken branches or dead branches. While this can be hard to do if your trees and shrubs are dormant because you don’t want to prune live parts of your plants, you usually know if something is amiss from your memory from the summer. This will help encourage new growth come spring.
Remove Any Remaining Dead Leaves
Many people mistakenly believe that brown grass is dead grass. However, this is far from the case. Your grass is merely dormant, alive and well in the soil below. It’s just not producing chlorophyll due to lack of sunlight in the winter months, which gives your grass its green color. Thus, dead leaves that sit on your lawn all winter long can kill the grass beneath, blocking out sunlight, CO2, nutrients, and moisture that your grass needs to survive the long winter.
