Simple New Year’s Landscaping Tips

When the winter hits and the days are shortened, most of us head home after a long day, put on our favorite pair of pajamas and slippers, and head to the warmest place in the home, such as in front of the fireplace. There is something inherently comforting about being wrapped as snug as a bug in a rug, and winter affords us that opportunity to do so. Still, just because Father Winter is knocking at your door doesn’t mean you can let your landscaping design go.

Compass Outdoor Design offers the best outdoor living space designs for your Dallas/Fort Worth home’s front or backyard. Our mission is to create beautiful, usable space that you can enjoy. We offer pergola installation, covered patios, backyard pizza ovens, outdoor fireplaces, and custom landscape design to suit your needs. From water features to sunrooms, we’ve got your needs covered. Below, we’ll go over some simple new year’s landscaping tips you can do to ensure your yard is ready for the spring and to add some pizzazz as you celebrate the new year. SIMPLE NEW YEAR’S LANDSCAPING TIPS FOR YOUR DFW HOME

Prune Dead Branches

In Dallas, the winters are usually mild. Thus, on a warmer day in the new year, it’s a good idea to walk around your front and backyard and prune your trees and shrubs that are exhibiting broken branches or dead branches. While this can be hard to do if your trees and shrubs are dormant because you don’t want to prune live parts of your plants, you usually know if something is amiss from your memory from the summer. This will help encourage new growth come spring.

Remove Any Remaining Dead Leaves

Many people mistakenly believe that brown grass is dead grass. However, this is far from the case. Your grass is merely dormant, alive and well in the soil below. It’s just not producing chlorophyll due to lack of sunlight in the winter months, which gives your grass its green color. Thus, dead leaves that sit on your lawn all winter long can kill the grass beneath, blocking out sunlight, CO2, nutrients, and moisture that your grass needs to survive the long winter. Thus, our outdoor living designers here at Compass Outdoor Design recommends that you remove any remaining dead leaves from the fall after the new year at your Dallas/Fort Worth home.

Decorate Your Front Door

Your front door is the first thing both you and visitors notice about your home. By decorating your front door right after the new year, you can bring a smile to all those who enter. Some of our favorite decorating ideas include hanging evergreen branches from your door, investing in a beautiful live wreath, or adding in soft white lights that twinkle. By adding in signs of life, you’ll be reminded that life is right around the corner.
