Fall is many people’s favorite time of the year, including residents of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The weather cools off, the leaves turn insanely beautiful colors, and jeans and sweaters have returned. But with fall comes an end to your favorite summer activities, such as pool parties, and these are replaced by more activities centered in the home. However, if you have a cozy outdoor fireplace and living area, you can prolong your outdoor living well into late fall.

FALL LANDSCAPING CARE TIPS

Aerate Your Yard

Aeration is a process that removes a bit of soil from your lawn that then allows life-giving oxygen and nutrients to enter your soil more easily. This then allows your grass to repair itself from any stresses of the summer, such as a drought. It also ensures your soil doesn’t become too compact. This will help prepare your lawn to flourish in the spring.

Rake, Rake, and Rake Some More

It’s super important to ensure no debris is left on your yard during the fall or winter months. Your grass is a living thing, meaning just because it’s brown doesn’t mean it’s dead. Grass needs to still be able to get oxygen and sunlight so that they can continue to produce food. Your lawn can become infected with lawn fungi if you leave wet leaves and debris piled on top of it. In addition, thatch, which is dead material that has accumulated over the year, can build up that can only be removed by raking. Rake your leaves, and turn them into compost for your garden for next year.

Plant New Trees and Shrubs

Fall is a great time to plant new trees and shrubs even though everything is heading towards dormancy. The soil is still warm and not frozen yet, so it should be easy to plant. Also, fall is a great time to fertilize your yard as well in order to give your yard the nutrients it needs to make it through the winter. If you aerate, fertilizing soon afterwards will allow all of the fertilizer to penetrate deep into the channels you just created, saving your grass a lot of hard work.
